The Litigation Boutique Will Now Be Known as Shapiro Arato Bach
New York, January 23, 2019 – Shapiro Arato LLP is pleased to announce that Jonathan Bach has joined the firm, and the firm will now be known as Shapiro Arato Bach. Bach joins from Cooley, where he served as partner-in-charge of the New York office.
Bach specializes in white collar criminal defense and complex business litigation and has handled numerous high profile trials during his nearly 30-year career. He has defended prominent Wall Street professionals, leading public and private companies and financial firms, and well known politicians and non-profit organizations. He is married to Alexandra Shapiro, who founded the firm in 2009 along with Cynthia Arato.
“Jonathan has one of the nation’s most respected white collar trial practices, which will serve as a strong complement to our well established appellate practice and enhance our ability to offer a full range of services from trial through appeal for our white collar clients,” said Shapiro, who represents individuals and institutions in appeals, criminal and regulatory matters, and complex civil litigation.
“Jonathan is a perfect fit. His expertise at trial and litigating high-stakes cases enhances our ability to handle our clients’ most significant matters and will further our continued success since founding our firm 10 years ago,” said Arato, a litigator with a practice focusing on intellectual property, media and entertainment, and commercial litigation. “His strong trade secret practice is an ideal complement to our firm’s intellectual property work.”
Bach has represented both domestic and foreign clients in regulatory investigations, grand jury investigations, corporate internal investigations, and international arbitrations, as well as in numerous contested litigations. In his criminal defense practice, he has obtained numerous trial acquittals and helped many individuals and entities avoid charges altogether.
“This is an exciting opportunity to join an elite boutique where I will be able to expand my range of clients and help build on the accomplishments of a truly dynamic firm with an exceptional team of lawyers,” Bach said.
Bach is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and currently serves on the Executive Committee of the New York Council of Defense Lawyers. He has authored numerous amicus briefs for the United States Supreme Court and testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on a variety of criminal law issues. For several years he co-taught a seminar at Columbia Law School on Federal Criminal Practice with Shapiro. He earned his JD from Yale Law School and also has an M. Phil. in American Studies from Yale Graduate School and a BA from Yale College.
